about us
Activaero is a German based drug delivery company, specializing in high efficient aerosol technologies and inhalation systems. One constant problem with inhaled drugs using traditional delivery methods is that it is not possible to control for precise dosing as much of the inhaled product does not reach the lung. Traditional technologies also do not take account of the wide inter-individual variation in breathing patterns, particular in patients with damaged lungs. Activaero addresses both of these concerns with its inhalation technologies, allowing the delivery of highly precise drug dosages to the human lung and to different lung regions and tailored very specifically to each patient’s breathing patterns.
Controlled breathing using Activaero’s delivery technologies, increases the efficiency of drug delivery of inhaled therapeutics by up to 80%. This means that laborious inhalation times can be reduced for patients. It also means that less of the active ingredient is needed to accomplish full dosing, reducing the overall cost of the medication.
At present, Activaero markets two proprietary inhalation devices:
- AKITA®, a state of the art controlled breathing technology for the precise and efficient pulmonary delivery of inhaled therapeutics, and
- Watchhaler™, a revolutionary innovative children spacer to be used with metered dose inhalers (MDIs)
The Company also has a range of inhalation technologies available globally for partnering with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies with inhaled therapeutic products that require critical dosage control. These technologies are available for use in the clinical trial setting as well as for marketed products:
- AKITA2®, a state of the art controlled breathing technology for the precise and efficient pulmonary delivery of inhaled therapeutics in the clinical trial setting. AKITA2® is used with vibrating membrane type nebulizers.
- LimiX™, first flow limitation valve that really controls the flow rate.
Activaero’s product portfolio also comprises measuring and diagnostic devices to be used within special laboratory settings including:
- Sedimentation Chamber, for use in the laboratory setting to measure the properties of aerosols.
Finally, Activaero does not simply supply delivery devices to partners or clinicians for use with inhaled therapeutics. The Company works on a consultancy basis with partners to develop optimized systems specific to trial parameters. Activaero can then coordinate the logistics of manufacture and supply, production of user manuals andd training of study coordinators as well as supporting the programming of smartcards for use with devices and recording of patient breathing patterns. Activaero also works with its sister company, Inamed Research, a CRO specializing in trials of inhaled medications.
The scientific basis for Activaero’s world leading inhalation platforms was originally developed from 20 years of research into aerosols at the GSF (Research Center for Environment and Health) in Munich, Germany. In 1998, the GSF spun out Inamed GmbH, which specialized in both the creation of controlled breathing platforms and the management of clinical trials for inhaled products.
In 2004, the CRO and devices business were split and Activaero became a stand alone company in 2005.
Activaero is privately held and has facilities in Munich (R&D), Gemünden/Wohra (Headquarters & Logistics) and Dublin, Ohio, USA (R&D and Business Development).
