LimiX™
LimiX™ is a proprietary flow limitation valve that mechanically controls the flow rate of air in inhalation devices.

Drug delivery to the lungs with commercial aerosol devices is characterized by a high variability of drug deposition. This has substantial implications for the effectiveness of accurate dosing when using these devices. A in vivo study has shown that total lung deposition can vary from 18 to 96% even for the same device, depending on the breathing patterns of the patient (Brand, P. et. al. J Pharm Sci 6/2000).
In order to control the flow rate to a steady constant slow rate that ensures a high level of intra thoracic deposition, Activaero has developed a mechanical valve that regulates the flow to a constant level during inhalation, regardless of the breathing patterns of the patient.
The valve can be integrated into any kinds of inhalation device. It is built as an air duct with a small cross-section meaning that, with increasing flow, the pressure drop increases and causes the flexible side wall move into the air duct (see Fig. 1).

LimiX™: the first flow limitation valve that really controls the flow rate
The dimension of the duct and the side wall can be optimized for different flow-rates. The controlled inspiration rate of the LimiX™ valve causes a reduction in extra thoracic deposition, which is especially useful for inhalation devices with non optimal particle sizes.
